Atheists why does the burden of proof of God's existence lie with christians?

Christianity an others religions have been around since the begining of man, but the belief that there is not God is a relatively new concept. So I think the burden of proof should lie with the ones making the claim he does not exist. I know they will say science says he doesn't, but science doesn't say either way.
